Connecing A External Cd Drive?

I have a cd drive which I am connecting to laptops via a IDE 2 USB adaptor.
When I connect it to my acer one notebook it recognises the hardware straight away and loads the correct drivers, when go into device manager shows the correct cd drive name.
but when i plug it into my HP compaq mini 702ea notebook it does not recognise the device and I can not get it to work.
Help please.
