If you've already got a strong desktop, then a netbook would be the way to go. They are lightweight and smaller, though of course they are also capable of less (for instance, gaming would be near impossible).

In reference to some earlier comments-- I'm a huge fan of macbooks myself, but they are extremely expensive and I'm pretty sure they would be massive overkill in this situation. I know several classmates who use netbooks for in-class purposes, and they work great. They are also much cheaper, but of course they aren't intended to be a replacement for a desktop.

Both netbooks that you listed their are the top of the class. Acer's only decent sub-$1000 (or so) laptop is the Aspire One netbook. The HP Mini is a very close second, only because the 9" Aspire Ones are selling for a good bit less in price. I would say an EeePC netbook is a good option as well, but it's a lot more expensive than the Aspire One- and Asus isn't as well known, so you might have some issues trying to find one (if you shop in stores). While the Eee was the original netbook, not too many of the billion or so models out there are that special when compared to other netbooks.

This is due to the new 10" Aspire One being released. Since it's essentially everything the same with the older Aspire Ones (okay, so the screen is diagonally 1" larger and the processor is a newer model), it's up to you which you get. The new Aspire Ones are getting reviews as good as or better than the old models.

What you choose is ultimately up to you. I personally love the netbooks and their purpose, and since I have a laptop and desktop already, I wouldn't really need a full-sized laptop. However, what you want is what you should get.

If you look for a full-size notebook, get a Lenovo or HP. You can't argue with their build qualities- especially Lenovo and the new HP lines. Avoid any Dell laptop under about $1100. I would also avoid anything Acer that isn't the Aspire One netbook, and anything eMachines or Gateway (both owned by Acer).

The Acer Aspire One netbook and the Asus EeePc are your best options. Especially since you already have a great desktop at home for more powerful things, a netbook is the best way to go because they are the cheapest computers out there, they're lightweight so it won't bog you down carrying it around campus, and they have the best battery life for taking notes.

I used to only have one computer, a 15.4 laptop, but I got so sick of carrying it around that I eventually started just leaving it at home. Since it never went anywhere anyway, I decided my next computer should be a desktop, and once I owned a desktop I decided a netbook would be a good investment, so I'm in pretty much the same boat you're in.

Here's my suggestion: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834220442
There's another one that's a 10" screen instead of an 8.9" screen, but it's $30 more, and there's one that's $20 less but doesn't have the 7 hour battery life. Both are ASUS EeePCs on that site, at both can be found on the first page of best rated netbooks if you're interested. I personally think the 7 hour battery life is worth the extra $20 while the extra .9 inches to the screen is not worth the extra $30, but that's for you to decide.
